Born in Ukraine, Lechner, together with his family, emigrated
in 1973 to Israel, where he now lives and works after graduating from HaMidrasha School of Arts in 2001. Lechner has held solo shows, and participated in group exhibitions, in Israel, Germany, and Latvia. His awards include Israel’s National Lottery Prize for Culture and Art.
Lechner’s Ukrainian heritage is reflected in his deep interest in tapestries, an interest that dates back to his childhood in Israel, surrounded by Ukrainian tapestries. Learning the art of tapestry-making through trial and error, he now works in both
tapestry and paint. Rather than reflecting personal experience, his work, created in the middle of a neglected orchard, describes an unstable, mythological world of hybrids, demons, humans and animals, nature’s forces in interplay with humanity.
