Born in the United Kingdom, Tom White graduated from the Camberwell College of Art in 2021. He is represented by Grove Collective (London and Berlin), for whom he has previously exhibited in both cities: ‘A Body of Work’ (2022); ‘Schloss Goerne’ (2022), at Kristin Hjellegjerde, Berlin; ASSEMBLE (2022), at VO Curations, London; and ‘London Now’ (2021), at London’s Saatchi Gallery.
White’s work aims to transcend mimesis by portraying the hidden truth behind his subject’s superficial exterior. Portraiture is his favourite genre; he is interested in the tension and interrelationship between artist and sitter. His subjects, whether presented on a large or small canvas, appear close up, dominating the painting and arresting the viewer’s attention.
